Knowledge & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

Here you will find everything you need to know about registration, the process, and the validity of official language certificates.

A telc exam is a standardized language test aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The telc certificate is an official, globally recognized proof of your language proficiency.

You may need it, for instance, for admission to a German university (C1 Hochschule), for naturalization (B1), for professional practice (B2), or for visa and spouse reunification procedures (A1/A2).

Yes, absolutely. telc gGmbH is one of the leading and most renowned providers of language examinations across Europe. telc certificates are state-recognized and officially required and accepted by ministries, universities, employers, and immigration authorities.

The cost of a telc exam varies depending on the language level and the examination center, as centers calculate their fees and administrative overhead independently.

Generally, prices range between €190 and €250. Specialized examinations like C1 Hochschule or professional language exams may sometimes cost slightly more.

The evaluation of the examinations takes place centrally at the telc headquarters in Bad Homburg. It usually takes approx. 3 to 6 weeks for the results to become available.

No more paper: Since February 2026, physical certificates are no longer sent by post or printed by telc. You will receive your certificate exclusively as a digital PDF document via email.

  • Digitally signed: The PDF certificates are issued with a qualified digital signature. You can print them as often as needed or forward them digitally.
  • Verified authenticity: Authorities and employers can verify the document's authenticity at any time by uploading the PDF file to the official telc verification portal.

Yes, you can retake a telc exam as many times as you wish. For many levels, such as B1 or B2, it is even possible to retake only the written or only the oral section, provided you have already passed the other part.

Please note, however, that examination fees will apply at your testing center for each retake.

telc stands for The European Language Certificates. telc gGmbH is a non-profit subsidiary of the German Adult Education Association (Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband e. V.) and has been developing recognized language examinations for over 50 years.

Both certificates, telc and Goethe, are recognized worldwide and follow the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Therefore, there is no generic "better" or "worse."

The difference lies in the details: telc exams are often slightly more structured and topically closer to everyday and professional life. The best choice is usually the certificate accepted by your respective authority, university, or employer, and for which you can find an earlier exam date.

The B1 level requires you to be able to communicate confidently and coherently in normal everyday situations, such as at work, school, and leisure. If you have attended an appropriate B1 course and prepared well, the exam is absolutely manageable.

The most important tip: Download the official practice tests. telc task formats are standardized. Knowing exactly how the tasks are structured gives you a major advantage in the exam.

Official telc certificates are valid indefinitely. They do not expire.

However, some employers, universities, or authorities require proof of language skills that is no older than one or two years to ensure that your knowledge remains current. It is therefore recommended to clarify this beforehand with the respective institution.

To be allowed to participate in the exam, you must be able to identify yourself. You must bring a valid, official photo ID in its original form, such as a passport, identity card, or residence permit. Copies or photos on mobile phones will not be accepted.

In addition, you should bring pencils (preferably HB), an eraser, and a sharpener, as the answer sheets are computer-readable and must be marked in pencil.

If your telc certificate is lost or damaged, you can request a duplicate from telc gGmbH. telc certificates are generally archived for up to 10 years.

Re-issuing a certificate is subject to a fee. The duplicate will be issued with a signature and a stamp.

Please note: In this event, our language institute, Schöne Sprache, unfortunately cannot assist you. Please contact telc gGmbH directly using the contact form on the official telc website.
